SALT 2018 April Calendar // FREE Wallpaper

The Salt Design 2018 Calendar is here – a homage to our most loved modern artists and art movements.

April – by Hannah

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was one of the most prolific and acclaimed artists of the 20th century. While he was best known for his Surrealist work, Dali had an expansive artistic repertoire which also included film, sculpture, and photography.

As an apt homage to Dali, our Salt Calendar design for April turns things upside-down – drawing inspiration from the melting, spiraling elements of the artist’s most popular work, The Persistence of Memory.

One of the most distinguishable aspects of the Surrealist movement and of Dali’s work was revealing unexpected juxtapositions and exploring everyday objects in an highly imaginative and somewhat abstract manner.

I particularly love Dali’s unique perspectives and symbolism, his slowing of time, notion of weightlessness and how he could bring his unconscious/dreams to life through his art.

Whilst walking alongside the river Thames during a visit to London in 2007, I had my own slightly ‘surreal’ encounter when I stumbled upon a tribute to Dali (The Dalí Universe: London). The bronze sculpture was such a striking contrast juxtaposed in front of the stunning London cityscape, complemented by the ornate lamp posts that lined the sidewalk of The Queen’s Walk. The piece embodied all that I love about Dali’s work – right down to the manner in which I discovered the artwork. It is a fond memory I hold to this day!

How wonderful to know Dali is as inspirational to me and other art lovers today as he has ever been!

The Salt Design 2018 Calendar is here – a homage to our most loved modern artists and art movements.

March – by Hannah

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. This made him a perfect fit for inclusion in the Salt Design Modern Masters 2018 Calendar!

As a founder of the De Stijl movement, Mondrian’s artistic vocabulary was created through simple geometric elements using blocks of primary colours and black grid lines. To this day, his style is instantly recognised and emulated by many modern artists and designers.

Mondrian certainly caught my eye when learning art history at school. I loved applying his style to screen-printing, using simple block colours to create bold, bright art pieces. His oil canvas, Broadway Boogie-Woogie, was one of my favourite pieces. The abstract composition evokes energy and rhythm, depicting the pace of life in the bustling metropolis that is New York City – a city I always dreamed of visiting (doesn’t everyone!?).

In 2007, I was fulfilled this dream by visiting the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC. It was a fantastic opportunity to view artworks by masters of their era, including Mondrian.

At university, one of my first design projects was to create patterns within a square, using grids and combinations of varying shapes and block colours. It reminded me of Mondrian’s work. Whilst a load of fun, it also taught me how the underlying principles of form and function are at the core of good design. To this day, I use these principles as a strong foundation and approach for beginning any design concept!

In the recent years, I have followed the working career of Camille Walala. I was so fortunate and excited to see Camille’s presentation at The Design Conference 2017. I love her use of brighter colours to create boundless energy in commercial spaces and textiles. To me, her work is a fresh, modern take on Mondrian’s style.

Salt Design 2018 Calendar

Design inspiration is found everywhere and in all manner of things. From a café menu to a packaging label, from the cover of annual report to a digital billboard whilst stuck in morning traffic! As designers, our strongest connection to visual design started with the study and admiration of the great artists and artworks of history.

2017 was an extra special year for one of our Salty peeps which included fulfilling a life-long dream to visit galleries in Paris and Barcelona to see the works of some of the world’s greatest artists. And this became the inspiration for our 2018 Salty Calendar – a homage to our most loved modern artists and art movements.

Each of the great masters we have selected for the calendar has particular meaning for each designer. Colour, form, passion and emotion were captured by each of these great artists. Please enjoy our personal interpretations of each artist.

We’ve already been helping out the big guy by posting calendars as Christmas goodies to all our fabulous clients, friends and supporters of Salt.
But if Santa hasn’t delivered – let us know and we’ll put in a good word for you!
