Abstract expressionism – open to interpretation?

Definition of ‘Abstract’: relating to or denoting art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but rather seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, colours, and textures.

In terms of my role as a graphic designer, my purpose is to take a potentially abstract concept and make it visually intelligible through typography, shape and colour. So I find myself asking – how could an artist like Jackson Pollock‘s work be an inspiration???

I guess it’s more about what I perceive would have been his attitude to artistic conventions. His abject denial to conform to the traditional conservatism of preceding art movements.

For Pollock, his drive came from within – to express himself in a manner which only he understood. To find a means by which to visually ‘speak’ in a language which no one else understood. To care more about what he felt and wished to say, than whether others could understand his meaning.

Now, this is definitely NOT an attitude I personally carry when approaching a new design project. However, I do begin the design process by defining, and then dispelling, what the conventional or stereotypical approach may be. It would be all too easy to follow the latest design trend, use the hippest colour palette or incorporate a cool new typeface just because ’everyone’s using it at the moment’. But to instead search past these norms and delve deeper into the brief to truly get to know what it is I am communicating encourages me to ‘push’ myself to learn new ways of using design to express a potentially abstract message.

I certainly don’t purport to getting a mind-blowingly different result every time. However, I believe  when the design process begins with pushing boundaries and not settling for the status quo – then hopefully the result is richer for the experience!

About Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 – August 11, 1956) was an American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his unique style of drip painting.

During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety; he was a major artist of his generation. Regarded as reclusive, he had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married the artist Lee Krasner, who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy.

Pollock died at the age of 44 in an alcohol-related single-car accident when he was driving. In December 1956, four months after his death, Pollock was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. A larger, more comprehensive exhibition of his work was held there in 1967. In 1998 and 1999, his work was honored with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and at The Tate in London. {WIKIPEDIA}
