The Salt Design 2018 Calendar is here – a homage to our most loved modern artists and art movements.

December – Vincent Van Gogh

With his iconic brush strokes and revolutionary use of colour, Vincent Van Gogh has mesmerized art lovers for over a century. And with over 2,000 artworks created in the decade of his artistic career, fans have a plethora to choose from.

With pieces like The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Wheatfield with Crows, Van Gough was greatly influenced by nature, and he was renowned for his use of saturated, complimentary colours. Van Gogh experimented with using colour to convey emotion, saying that “colour expresses something in itself” and that it has a “psychological and moral weight”. Van Gogh also used a distinct brushstroke, that in his day was considered rudimentary and amateurish, but has influenced millions of artists since his death.

Unfortunately, Van Gogh suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness and spent his 37 years in and out of institutions, before taking his own life. With so many masterpieces created in the 10 short years of his career, one can only imagine what more Van Gogh was capable of, had his circumstances been different.

Modern day inspiration

Alisa Burke, artist, mural painter and mentor, is a creative who also loves to experiment with colour and takes her inspiration from nature and the world around her. She uses bright saturated colours that contrast to evoke emotion.

Dan Huton, a New York artist, experiments with vibrant contrasting colours and distinctive brush strokes.

Whaam!! Roy Lichtenstein’s work is certainly striking and well-recognised through his use of primary colours, bold black outlines and half tone dot and line patterns.

As a leading figure in the world of Pop Art, his work was greatly inspired by enlarged comic strip styles, which often depicted parody and female portraits. “I take a cliche and try to organize its forms to make it monumental. The difference is often not great, but it is crucial.” Roy Lichtenstein

He most famous works included Drowning Girl, Whaam! and Girl with Ball – a particular favourite of mine.

I was so excited to see his work at the MoMA in NYC, with the highlights campaign and book displaying his work on the cover. The gallery label from the artwork reads:

Lichtenstein took the image for Girl with Ball straight from an advertisement for a hotel in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains. In pirating it, however, he transformed the photographic image, using a painter’s version of the techniques of the comic-strip artist. The resulting simplifications intensify the artifice of the picture, concentrating its careful evocation of fun in the sun. The girl’s round mouth is more doll-like than female; any sex appeal she had has become as plastic as her beach ball.

MODERN DAY INSPIRATION

In the recent years, I have followed the work of Camille Walala and Gemma O’Brien (Mrs Eaves101) who use a brighter colour palette and modern take on this style. Gemma’s decorative background patterns, line work and dotted elements create energy and dimension in her typography – which I love, especially due to the large scale of her murals!

A few of our favourite and inspiring creatives to mention include:
Camille Walala
Gemma O’Brien
Wanissa Somsuphangsri

October – by Daile

Jean Miro 1893 – 1983

Miró’s attachment to the landscape of his country of birth was crucial in his work. His connection to the land and his interest in everyday objects and in the natural environment formed the backdrop to some of his technical and formal research.

Miró pursued a constant quest for a pure, global art that could not be classified under any specific movement.

It was through art that Joan Miró expressed rebelliousness and a strong sensitivity to the political and social events around him. These conflicting forces led him to create a unique and extremely personal language that makes him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

In early 2017, we had the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain. Such energy and expression, so vivid and alive! During our travels between Barcelona and Madrid, we also saw first-hand the countryside and landscapes that inspired Miro’s work. However, it was the colour and abstract shapes and elements in his work that we find most engaging.

Today we can find elements of similar visual expression in graphic design, fashion and interior design. Colour and abstract patterning provide us with avenues for creative expression far beyond real-life visuals such as photography and more traditional portrayals of landscapes.

The freedom an artist like Jean Miro has to visually express his emotions, thoughts and beliefs provides us (the viewer) with the opportunity to interpret, adopt and personalise what we see into an expression of our own emotions, ideas and beliefs. Seeing then truly becomes believing!

“I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them.”
– Pablo Picasso

I think it’s pretty safe to say that Picasso is one of the all-time greats! You would be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t heard of this legendary artist.

Born in Spain in 1881, Pablo Picasso spent his early years drawing and painting and showed an extraordinary talent. Under the tuition of his father, who was both an artist and Professor of Fine Arts, Picasso flourished and went on to have long and prolific career. Although most well-known for co-founding the Cubist movement, he also went through periods of painting classical, neoclassical, African-inspired, surrealist and neo-expressionist styles. He was also a sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright, and continued to produce art right up until his death in 1973, at the age of 92.

With such a prolific career, it’s not surprising so many other artists were inspired by Picasso’s work. Pop Artist, Roy Lichtenstein, acknowledges that Picasso was a huge influence on his early work, claiming “I was always afraid of looking like Picasso. The more I tried to evade his influence, the more self-conscious the paintings got and the more evident was the source.” Jackson Pollack was another artist who took inspiration from Picasso, with his use of bold colour and abstract symbols. Camille Walala, a modern day designer and artist, draws on the bright colours and heavy lines of Picasso’s later work, as well as referencing cubism through many of her designs.

Needless to say, the world of art has benefited greatly, not just from Picasso’s own work, but those he has and continues to influence.

Think Monet… think water lilies!

Just over 10 years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It was fantastic to view artworks by masters of their era, including Monet.

There was something very special about being surrounded by the curved walls of Monet’s Water Lilies paintings at the MoMA, to then be strolling through very similar scenes in New York’s Central Park. And this was very much Monet’s intention – to immerse the viewer in nature through expansive compositions that would evoke an emotional response.

Monet’s life and works
Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a French Impressionist with the ambition of: ‘Documenting the French countryside which led him to adopt a method of painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons.’

From 1883, Monet lived in Giverny, where he purchased a house and property and began a vast landscaping project which included lily ponds that would become the subjects of his best-known works. {Wikipedia}

Modern day inspiration
There has certainly been a movement over the past few years of bringing the outdoors, indoors and we see this happening in a variety of creative fields – from interior design, to stationery design, to fabric patterns and artworks.

A few of our favourite and inspiring creatives to mention include:

  • Rifle Paper Co.
  • Peaches and Keen
  • Mister Zimi
  • Edith Rewa
