Who run the world! Girls!

Creativity comes from within – whether you’re male or female. And thankfully, design and print are industries where men and women can, and do, work together to collaborate, create and develop great designs and print!

At Salt we are living proof of this. And we believe it’s definitely something worth celebrating – being passionate, creative (female) designers.

In recognition of this, we’ve just signed up to a new network called the Femeconomy – which celebrates the achievements of businesses that are predominantly run by women. It’s a great venture aimed at raising awareness and highlighting the sometimes gender inequalities (real or perceived) that occurs in businesses and industry.

We’re not rushing out to burn our bras or beat our chests crying out for feminine freedoms! Nahh – we’re just very proud to work in a small business, owned and operated by a woman, who employs highly talented and creative young women!

The Design Conference Brisbane 2017 // PART 2

The Design Conference was a two-day experience for us Salty designers!
{Read more about Part 1 here!}

Gemma – Designer, Salt Design

Mike Rigby
Mike Rigby delved into client projects just enough to keep us interested and wanting more. The highlight was watching the videos from his project titled ‘love has no labels’. These videos captivated the audience and pulled on our heart strings. If you haven’t seen them – I recommenced you do!

Lauren Hom
My favourite speaker of the day was Lauren Hom. Her presentation was polished and motivating. She showed empathy throughout her speech and connected with the audience by telling honest stories and not glossing over the strife in her life. Lauren’s pitch was to believe in your passion projects as these are the projects that have won in her life. I made note of many of her inspirational slides – such as ‘everything is design’ and ‘drunk conversions are creative goldmines!’. I was so inspired that as soon as I got home I read everything I could find on her – even purchased one of her prints!

Prue Jones
Prue Jones presentation was unexpectedly interesting. Prue works in Service Design (ie. design we all use but don’t own like Spotify and Netflix). A big part of Prue’s job is research, which meant she wanted to research us – her audience. She asked us all to visit the same website and we proceeded to answer questions on the large presentation screen by using our phones. We watched the data tally right in front of our eyes, it was great fun! Prue then went on to discuss the scary topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It was super-intriguing and made me realise how important it is to keep up to date with AI developments.

David Leavitt and David Torres – Cyrcle
Just as the audience was left shaking in their boots… out walks David Leavitt and David Torres from Cyrcle. I thought to myself “wow, this is either gonna make or break the wrap-up of this conference *wince*,” but it totally MADE it!!!

Imagine two typical LA artists, who look like they have never left the 90s and who love their cat dearly!

This duo was entertaining, funny, confusing and informative all at the same time. I appreciated their honesty as the pair scrolled through an endless number of photos, giving us a sneak peek of what their living / working lifestyle has been like. I will always remember watching as they told us when the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air attended their first art show and then proceeded to sing the theme song and dance around the stage, as if they had done this many times before!!!

When the world is your oyster – you need to look as good as you taste!

We eat with our eyes, so it made perfect sense for our client Freycinet Marine Farm to approach Salt Design to refresh their corporate identity. You can view our initial re-brand project here!

Wide format print production

Once again, Salt Design’s wide format print capabilities have proven so valuable to our designs! We have recently printed a suite of menu signs for the counter display! We are so pleased to have replaced the old make-shift signs with these delicious-looking posters!

Printed on our Roland XR-640 Wide Format Printer, using BJBALL Rhino W/F PP White Film Solvent SB300 ensuring the menus are easily cleaned and will continue to look like new!

Recent accolades

Recently, Freycinet Marine Farm came second in the Tasmanian Tourism Awards. Recognised nationally and internationally, this prestigious Award is proof of our client’s quality products, business acumen and progressive approach to tourism.

Congratulations Julia, Giles and all the Freycinet Marine Farm Team!

Next challenge

We have loved our involvement with Freycinet Marine Farm so far! We hope to begin designing a new website for them in the new year. . .

Our humble beginnings

How do you come up with a catchy memorable quirky name for a new design studio?

This is the very question I was confronted with almost 10 years ago when I decided to start up Salt Design.

So – why Salt?

Firstly, salt is a flavour enhancer. It’s used in cooking to bring out other flavours. Ever wondered why salted caramel taste so good? The sweetness of the caramel is actually amplified by the salt. In a similar way I saw how design can bring out the best in our client’s business, to accentuate their appeal to their own customers.

On another level, I believe we are the ‘salt of the earth’. We’re humble people who just love what we do and love doing it well – providing good service and quality design to our clients.

Another reason for choosing ‘salt’ is a very personal one. For my entire life I have loved and lived for the sea. Swimming, fishing, diving – it’s my special place. Over the past 10 years Salt has become my ‘other’ special place where I have come to share a love for design with others (both staff and clients). It’s where I have gained a sense of pride and sense of self. As much as the sea epitomises who I am – Salt now represents what a team of dedicated, passionate people like everyone at Salt can achieve!

And lastly, I should probably mention that when there’s tequila and lime on hand – I’m a tad over-zealous with the saltshaker!
